Entries Balloon to 68
Bubba Pollard Enters for
the Fourth Time |
OXFORD 250 ENTRY LIST - 8/29/21 |
Oxford, ME
-- Entry number fifty-nine for the 2021 Oxford
250 was none other than 2018 champion Bubba
Pollard #26. The Senoia, Georgia driver is among
the many that fill a star-studded field that
promises to make the 48th annual Oxford 250 as
one of the best in a number of years. After a
2020 race that was only seen by a couple of
hundred people in the stands, fans, sponsors,
and racers alike are eagerly awaiting this
year's edition of the storied race for the 68
drivers that have entered.
"We are
looking forward to seeing a highly competitive
250 this year," said Pro All Stars Series (PASS)
President Tom Mayberry. "The 2021 season has
been filled with some great competition, and we
expect that to carry right into one of our
biggest events of the year on August 29th."
Calvin Rose Jr. and Tim Brackett were
officially the first two entries of this year's
race. Rose, out of Turner Maine, and Brackett
from Buckfield are both weekly competitors at
the famed 3/8 mile oval. Both drivers have been
a part of multiple 250s throughout their career
and hope to be one a short list of regular
Saturday night drivers to etch their name on the
250 trophy.
Two time race winner (2003 &
2004) Ben Rowe and Northeast Legend and three
time 250 winner (1984, 1997, & 2005) Mike Rowe
highlight a star studded field. Both Turner,
Maine drivers hope to put their name in the
record books one more time.
Travis
Benjamin has three 250 titles to his credit
(2013, 2014,& 2019) and hopes for a fourth,
while 2020 winner Johnny Clark hopes to become
the sixth driver in 250 history to go back to
back.
"It's a real pleasure to see so
many top-notch drivers committing to be a part
of one of the biggest weekends on the Eastern
Seaboard," said Mayberry, "The 250 consistently
stages some of the best racing of the year, and
by the looks of our entry list, this year will
be no exception."
The impressive list
reads like a who's who of Super Late Model
racing in the Northeast, including drivers with
long lists of accomplishments that have not yet
won an Oxford 250. Among the leaders in that
category is nine-time track champion Jeff Taylor
who led a significant portion of the 2020
edition before a pit miscue relegated him to
second. Cassius Clark and DJ Shaw would also
like add "250 Champion" to their already
impressive resumes.
2017 250 winner, 2019
OPS track champion and multi-time PASS winner
Curtis Gerry, and 2020 OPS track champion Dave
Farrington Jr. headline the contingent of local
favorites. Alan Wilson and Dennis Spencer Jr.
have both won weekly races and run well in
longer PASS races. Back-to-back winner (2009 &
2010) Eddie MacDonald still seeks his first 250
win in a SLM and multi-time PASS Champion DJ
Shaw's name is still missing from the 250
winners list as is recent PASS winner Joey
Doiron.
Local young hot shoes like
Austin Teras, Kyle DeSouza and Brandon Barker
promise to make the veterans earn their way,
while the Canadian contingent will be
represented by Cole Butcher, who has shown a
tremendous amount of speed in several races in
recent history.
Among other entries are
the likes of Tracy Gordon, Jeff White, Mike
Hopkins, Derek Griffith, Kate Re, and Garrett
Hall, whom have all shown the ability to win
races at Oxford Plains. Also in the fray will be
Ben Ashline, Trevor Sanborn, Ryan Robbins, Shawn
Martin, and Gary Drew.
Will 2021 usher in
a surprise winner or will we see a repeat
performance by a past champion? We will all find
out Sunday August 29th.
With a list of 68
and rising Super Late Model drivers of the
highest caliber in the United States, the 48th
annual Oxford 250 promises to be one for the
history books!

Street Stocks Set for
Triple Crown on 250 Weekend |
Oxford,
ME -- As a part of the 48th Annual Oxford
250 weekend, Oxford Plains Speedway (OPS) will
host a special Triple Crown Points series for
Street Stock type cars over the weekend slated
for August 27th, 28th and 29th. These three
special races will have their own points with
the top 3 awarded trophies at the end of the
weekend.
"We want to do what we can to
make the street stocks an integral part of the
250 weekend," said track owner Tom Mayberry.
"Street Stock type race cars are a staple of any
short track nationwide and Oxford Plains
Speedway is no different. We thought it would be
nice for the guys that race here weekly to have
a chance to race in front of some big crowds
while bringing in some cars from other tracks
for a great weekend of racing."
Number of
laps for each race will be at least 30. Rules
for the 250 weekend will follow the normal OPS
Street Stock rules. Tires will be the Hoosier
790. Daily lineups will be determined by a blind
draw for heat races with feature lineups
contingent on heat finishes.

Lap Leader
Money Adds a
Unique Twist to the 250 |
2021 OXFORD 250 LAP BOARD |
We still have 250 laps available to sponsor.
Your lap will be posted on the website.
Give Mary a call between 9 AM and 7 PM
at 207-693-6497. Don't miss your
chance to advertise your business, honor a loved
one, or cheer your favorite driver on.
We appreciate
your support! |
Back in 1981, Oxford Plains Speedway Patriarch
Bob Bahre was looking for a way to add a twist to the
pit strategy of the 250 lap race. While there had always
been a couple of different strategies, Bahre wanted to
make the leader think twice before ducking onto pit road
around the customary mid-point of the contest for tires
and fuel. What was born from that brainstorm was a plan
to pay the leader of each lap $50 and thus perhaps give
them a reason to extend the pit stop to the later stages
of the race. In 1984, that program grew to the current
$100 per lap and has been a staple of the 250 ever
since.
Over the years, many a local racer has
managed to find their way to the front and the allure of
the guaranteed pay day. In 1987 Billy Clark led a number
of laps before pitting with 37 laps left for fuel and
tires handing the win to Jamie Aube. He never made his
way back to the front, ultimately finishing sixth.
In 1990 and 1991, drivers Chuck Bown and Ricky
Craven both led well over 100 laps in route to
dominating wins that ended up paying each driver over
$50,000. Ralph Nason triumphed 3 years running in the
prestigious event and on each occasion led between 75
and 150 laps, enough to make him the all-time leader in
laps led over the 47 year history of the 250.
"The Lap leader money always seems to provide an extra
twist to just about every 250," said PASS president Tom
Mayberry. "Sometimes the extra money causes drivers to
stay out too long and costs them a chance at winning the
race. But sometimes it ends up being a very good pay day
for someone who may need an infusion at that time of the
year. We really like the added strategy that lap money
adds to the 250."
In years past, laps not sold
were covered by the Speedway. In 2020, Oxford Plains
Speedway was forced to adjust the way these laps were
paid. The total amount of lap money is divided by 250
laps and paid out equally across the board. Fans,
businesses, and teams rallied to sell out all but a
handful of laps so that the lap leader program continued
to exist at nearly full payout.
"We were
overwhelmed at the amount of support we received for the
lap leader program in 2020," said Mayberry. "We hope we
can replicate that again in 2021 and continue this long
standing tradition. Laps are a great way to advertise
your business, in memory of someone, or to celebrate an
occasion (birthday etc) and the drivers really
appreciate that extra lap leader money."
With the
Oxford 250 a little over a month away there are still
plenty of spots available for the 250 lap leader
program. If you want to sponsor a lap you may contact
Mary between 9am and 7pm at 207-693-6497.
