Spencer Beats the Best for First PASS Victory
Oxford, Maine - While the weather forecast looked bleak Saturday, October 16th weather was a non-factor for the Spencer Group Paving PASS New England North finale. Competitors were able to get all 375 Laps of feature racing in at Oxford Plains Speedway. Over 100 cars entered the pits for four exciting divisions. 44 of which were Super Late Models.

With only 35 Spots available for the Spencer Group Paving 150 and 44 participants Oxford proved for exciting heat racing action like always. The four Super Late Model Heats were won by Trevor Sanborn, Scott, McDaniel, Garret Hall and Scott Mulkern as he continues his comeback after a failed attempt at retirement.

Due to those heat wins Mulkern and McDaniel led the field to green for the Spencer Group Paving 150. McDaniel in the #14 battled hard on the outside of the #84 of Mulkern for a dozen laps before finally clearing to the bottom just before 2001 Oxford 250 Champion Gary Drew took a spin on the front stretch causing the first caution of the race.

McDaniel maintained the lead on the ensuing restart but on Lap 16 Calvin Rose snuck to the inside of McDaniel just before a Justin Larson spin slowed the field for the second caution. Rose took his Lake City Exports Chevrolet to the point and took off leading the next 30 plus laps before Dennis Spencer Jr. found his rhythm in the outside groove. Dennis ran down and passed both Calvin Rose and Oxford standout Curtis Gerry. Spencer has over thirty victories at Oxford and 4 Oxford Plains Track Championships in the Limited Sportsman and Late Model ranks. He had won about everything you can at Oxford except a PASS race.

While Spencer was opening up an impressive lead Johnny Clark was on the move, looking to clinch his 7th PASS North Championship. With 85 Laps to go Johnny's Clark's Scrap Metals Crushing/Port City Racecars #54 made contact with the 7L of Glen Luce who was running 4th. Luce spun and slowed the field for the fourth time on the day. Clark would continue his march to the front by getting past Calvin Rose and would work his way past Curtis Gerry for a moment. However Gerry would fight back and regain the second spot. Gerry had the fastest car late in the race and got to the back bumper of Spencer but it was to no avail as Spencer won his first Pro All Stars Series Super Late Model event by less than a car length.

Dennis said later in victory lane, "Early in the race the guys were trying to tell me to save my stuff. I wasn't really driving it that hard. When Curtis was with me that's all I had. It's just awesome to win. Best in the business second and third. To beat them guys is awesome."

Curtis Gerry has been on a streak of seconds lately coming up just short in the Oxford 250 to Cassius Clark this year. By Gerry's count this was the fifth big race this season where he finished second right on the back bumper of the winner.

Johnny Clark came home third and was crowned the Pass New England North Champion, and his efforts were good enough to almost clinch his 7th career Pass North Overall Championship and his first since 2011.

4th place went to 2014 Pass Sportsman Champion Joey Pastore #20 and the top 5 was rounded out by the #99 Ben Ashline of Elmira, Maine.

The Super Late Models still have one race left to go on the season October 23rd at Seekonk. "The Haunted Hundred" will also decide the last two Championships, The New England South battle as well as the PASS National Championship. Derek Griffith, DJ Shaw and Johnny Clark will all have another chance to pick up season long hardware in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The other Championship to be decided on 10/16 was a lot more hotly contested. The PASS MODS division has quickly become one of the most competitive divisions in the northeast with 6 drivers mathematically having a shot at the championship coming into the final event of the year. 18-year-old Max Cookson lead the point standings by just 2 points over 19-year-old Garret Lamb with Ajay Cates, Brandon Varney, Shawn Knight and Spencer Morse having outside chances to win the Championship.

In the 18 years of PASS MODS competition a rookie had never won the championship, and Cookson, Lamb and Brandon Varney all had the opportunity to do just that. Cates, Varney and another rookie Alex Ricker all took heat race wins. Ricker and Varney lead the field to green for the 75 lap feature.

Varney took off with the early advantage over Ricker and looked on pace to win his first ever PASS MODS race, leading 51 laps and holding off a host of different competitors throughout a multitude of restarts.

The PASS MODS normally only run 50 laps but the extended race caused the #1 Henry's Concrete Modified to fade. "The Iracing Kid" Max Cookson was there to capitalize pulling past Varney on lap 52.

Ryan Ripley and Tyler King were also charging to the front, but once Max took the lead it was obvious that Max would be picking up his 6th official win of the season and his third straight. Lamb had an off day finishing 13th after a late race incident, handing Max the Championship by 30 points.

It wasn't all easy for Max this year although it did look it on the track. Max recovered from an early season disqualification and a 100-point disadvantage to win his first championship in his first full season in a stock car let alone the highly competitive MODS tour. Max has already sold his current car and will be moving up to the weekly Super Late Model ranks at Oxford in 2022.

Cookson took home the checkers with 2020 Champion Tyler King in second. 2021 two-time winner Ryan Ripley was third with Spencer Morse and Dan Brown rounding out the top 5.

The Street Stocks gave a try at a Milk Bowl style event with three 25 lap races. Whomever had the lowest overall finishing position would be the winner. It didn't take a whole lot of work on the calculator to figure out Jordan Russell of Norway was the Winner. He won all three of the 25 lappers and put on an absolute clinic.

Jordan beat out Brian Caswell, Ryan Phillips, John Brill and George Haskell and proved that his 2021 OPS Track Championship was not a fluke and that he is one of the best support series drivers in New England.

The Limited Sportsman/Sport Series/Super Street Division was a staple at Oxford Plains Speedway from 1977 till 2006 when previous track owner Bill Ryan pulled the plug on the division. In those nearly 30 years it was known as one of the most competitive divisions and best racing that could be seen anywhere. Drivers like Carey Martin, Dennis Spencer Jr., Richie Morse, Gary Shackford and Kenny Harrison cut their teeth in for years in that division creating stars. The Sportsman made a few one-off trips to Oxford under the PASSs banner in 2012 to 2014 but fans at Oxford Plains Speedway have been without them at all for years. With the recent closing of Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Tom Mayberry has once again found a place for racers to race. Creating an open show for the now endangered division and potentially a full-time class next season.

It's pretty fitting that a Harrison would end up in victory lane on the return trip. Robbie Harrison won in the return to Oxford after missing most of the race season with a heel injury suffered in a victory celebration earlier this season at Beech Ridge. Harrison refrained from jumping up and down in victory lane but did do a heck of a burnout.

Robbie edged out 2021 and 4-time Beech Ridge Sport Series Champion Chris Smith to do it. Devin Curit ran third after contact with his brother Dominic Curit who finished 4th, while James Osmond a Wiscasset regular finished 5th.

We would like to thank all the fans and support series drivers for another great season at Oxford. While the Oxford season is officially over you can still get one more fix of short track racing. ONE. MORE. RACE will be held this season for the Pro All Stars Series, the American Canadian Tour, and the Tri-Track Open Modified Series on Saturday, October 23rd at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Massachusetts. Racing starts at 1:00 PM for three, 100 lap features showcasing all of the top talents in New England.
