- Hall of Fame Driver Russ Wood came home the victor in
the New England Supermodified Series Sherm Arnold's
Flooring 50 Saturday, August 5th at Oxford Plains
Speedway. Local hot shoe Bobby Timmons III out of
Windham, ME put on a hard charge but came up a little
bit short and settled for second while Massachusetts
driver Matt Swanson piloted the Lane Racing number 9 to
a distant third.
Wood, a winner of over well 100
Supermodified Races in his illustrious career, jumped
out front early in the 50 lap contest and was able to
build up a substantial lead as the high powered Big
Block winged racers ripped around the 3/8 mile oval in
the 13 to 14 second range. Wood normally drives his own
number 41 entry, but was tapped by car owner Howie Lane
to wheel the popular number 97 on this night.
As
the laps ticked down, that choice would prove fruitful
as the veteran driver managed his lead well over the
second half of the contest. Timmons moved into the
second spot just past the halfway point and Wood,
sensing the chase, was able to pick up the pace over the
final 10 laps and cruise home to a 2 second victory over
Timmons and teammate Swanson.
The NESS tour
returns to action as a part of the 50th Annual Spencer
Group Paving Oxford 250 weekend with a double header
races Friday and Saturday night August 25th and August
26th.
