NESS Gears Up for a Big Year Two
Will Visit OPS on July 8th, Aug. 5th, & Aug. 26th
Naples ME - Excitement is building in anticipation of the sophomore season for The New England Super Modified Tour (NESS) which is kicking off its steady nine race schedule at the Thunder Road Speed bowl on June 9th. With less than three weeks until opening day at the "Nations Site of Excitement", drivers are busily preparing their high powered, big winged Supermodifieds to turn sub 10 second laps around the steeply banked 1/4 mile oval in Barre Vermont.

The 2023 edition of NESS includes a pair of visits to the aforementioned Thunder Road with a second date on September 30th. Oxford Plains Speedway will dot the schedule three times with dates on July 8th, August 5th, and August 26th as a part of the 50th annual Oxford 250 weekend. White Mountain Motorsports Park has one date on July 14th and a 2nd to be confirmed on September 16th. Finally the High banked 5/8 Mile Thompson Speedway Plays host to NESS on June 21st and again on October 7th as a part of the World Series of racing.

Officials on the NESS tour have worked hard to keep the schedule compact and easy on the teams with as few conflicts as possible. NESS has also strived to create a rule book that promotes close competition, fair and equitable rules, and cost containment to reign in spiraling costs for all teams. "One of the biggest things NESS has done is cut down on travel cost," said car owner Howie Lane. "There is a lot of driver's right here in New England with Supermodifieds that just can't afford to travel to Ohio and Michigan to race. These teams are made up of guys that have to be at work Monday morning. NESS gives us a place to race without having to book hotel rooms and travel hundreds of miles."

The sentiment was echoed by Windham Maine's Bobby Timmons III. "For us, we just love Supermodified racing and have always had to travel. It's nice having a big block series that races in our back yard." said Timmons. The Timmons family has a long tradition of Supermodified racing with Timmons III being a third generation driver, and the NESS tour has given them the ability to add more races to their schedule.

The June 9th opening day at Thunder Road is shaping up to be one of the best NESS shows yet. Lane cited the smaller tracks on the NESS tour as another added safety benefit. "These smaller tracks naturally keep speeds in check and the racing close, said Lane. "Things happen very fast in a Supermodified." Lane also cited the possibility of higher car counts at the opener in Vermont. "With all the guys I have talked to, I'd say we may have 12 to 14 entries in Thunder Road including guys like Ben Seitz, Anthony Nocella, Russ Wood, and Matt Swanson. That many cars on that small track should make for some great racing."

Inaugural NESS Champion Robbie Summers has also filed an entry for Thunder Road as he plans to defend his title in 2023. In addition to cost savings on travel, Summers cites other cost savings measures implemented by officials on the NESS tour. "Everything has changed so much since Covid and the cost of everything has gone up so much. NESS has made the 572 Spec motor option available which saves about 10 to 15 thousand dollars on a motor. But they have also implemented a gear rule for the open motors, and by doing that they have made them last 1 to 2 years now instead of 6 races. That's a big help."

Supermodified racing is a "different kind of racing," said Summers. Big Block engines mounted on the side of the car, giant wings atop the chassis, and huge slick tires mean speeds not commonly seen at the local short track. Typically in racing, speed means more money, and that is where NESS steps in. Said Summers, "They (NESS) have done everything in their power to make it affordable and keep it alive while bringing in new blood." Local short track aces like Derek Griffith, Nick Sweet, and Derek Ranstrom have all taken turns behind the wheel of a Supermodified, with Griffith snagging a win at Oxford last year.

The NESS tour has also implemented additional protocols like the tire program in order to help even the competition. Drivers now must chose and mount their tires at the race track on race day vs in advance. This is a regulation that helps monitor any chemical altering of tires pervious to the event, and therefore cutting down on more costs and man power.

NESS president Tom Mayberry is optimistic for the coming season. "We have had a tremendous amount of interest in the off-season," said Mayberry. "We think this is on the verge of becoming something big enough to do 8 to 10 very big races every year. We are going to keep working on cost savings so we can build this thing into something special."

With the unique appearance of a Supermodified, the high speeds, and a crop of new drivers and wily veterans, the NESS tour is poised to launch to the next level in 2023.

2020 HONEY BADGER BAR & GRILL
STREET STOCK SERIES SCHEDULE
KYLE HEWINS - SKIP TRIPP - BILLY CHILDS
Eight Races On Tap For 2020
Honey Badger Street Stock Series
Naples, ME - The fourth year of the fledgling Honey Badger Street Stock Series (HBSSS) will is set to grow to eight races for the 2020 season. Born from a series of open races in 2017 at Oxford Plains Speedway, The HBSSS has grown into a very popular proving ground for street stock drivers all across Northern New England as they test their talents against some of the region's best. This year's edition of the series sanctioned by the Pro-All Star Series (Pass) is slated for five races at hub track Oxford Plains Speedway, along with one event each at Speedway 95, White Mountain Motorsports Park, and Thunder Road.

"We are very pleased with continued success of this series," said PASS President Tom Mayberry, "We have been very deliberate with slow and steady growth to make sure we are giving the racers what they want, without affecting the weekly shows."

This year's schedule starts off with a pair of races at Oxford Plains Speedway on April 26th and May 31st as a part of visits from the Pass tour. Skip Stanley, Kyle Hewins, Jordan Russell, and Kenny Harrison were all victorious in fields of at least 20 drivers per race in 2019. Speedway 95 on June 21st will host race three where Hewins hopes to snag another win at the narrow Bangor speed plant before a return to the home track of Oxford Plains on July 3rd and August 16th.

White Mountain Motorsports Park will be the site of round six where Oxford Skip Tripp hopes for a repeat of last year's dominating performance while runner-up and 2019 HBSSS Champion hopes to stop him in his tracks. The tight New Hampshire quarter mile has quickly become a driver favorite in the last two year.

One of the more exciting new races is a trek across the mountains to scenic Thunder Road Speed bowl in Barre Vt. as a part of the historic Milk Bowl Weekend. "We wanted to give the guys a chance to race at a couple of different venues while keeping in mind that these are grass roots racers on a budget," Mayberry said. "We considered adding Loudon, but that is a big race with a lot of unknowns, so we opted to keep that as an open and add in Thunder Road for the first time."

The Series then returns to Oxford Plains Speedway for its championship race on October 17th. Last year's Honey Badger Street Stock Point Series was taken down by Leeds Driver Billy Childs Jr who also won the late season Triple Crown. Jordon Russell, Kyle Hewins, Kenny Harrison and Shawn Knight rounded out the top five. Add to that list multi-time champion Matt Dufault, Brian Caswell, and Skip Tripp who has stated his intentions to run the entire series, along with several top drivers from surrounding tracks and the series looks to continue in 2020 with strong fields and heavy competition.

TIM BRACKETT - CALVIN ROSE JR. - CURTIS GERRY
OPS SLM PREVIEW:
The Most Competitive Division
in the Northeast
Oxford, ME - No less than 24 different faces have graced the number one position over the past two seasons in Oxford Championship Series Budweiser Super Late Model competition. With car counts often in the mid to high 20s, Oxford Plains Speedway has one of the most competitive divisions in the entire Northeast and beyond. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, 2020 promises to be no different.

One of the hottest drivers at OPS over the last few years has been Waterboro's Curtis Gerry who has declared his intent to defend his 2019 championship. The pilot of the familiar black 7g has visited victory lane 10 times over the past few seasons between Championship Series Racing and Pro All Stars Series competition, including the prestigious 2017 Oxford 250.

Ready to take to the fight in the battle to unseat the 7g will be the father son duo of Tim and TJ Brackett from Buckfield, Maine. The Brackett's have long been stalwarts at OPS for the better part of 35 plus years and boast 6 championships with over 75 wins between them. Tim debuted a new car last season and now that the bugs have been worked out, looks to contend for multiple wins and share in the title hunt with son TJ. The younger Brackett, who has showed a lot of speed and narrowly missed the 2018 championship, suffered some injuries last season which derailed him from full time competition. TJ looks to bounce back in and battle for the big prize.

Another father son duo also promises to make their mark in 2020. This duo is led by driver Calvin Rose Jr and his dad Calvin Sr. Toward the end of 2019 they purchased a Distance Chassis that they raced one time as a shakedown. Driver 8 won multiple championships and races in support divisions before making the jump to the powerful SLM class in 2017. With their first win in 2018, and a pair in 2019, the Rose Racing Team is poised to make the leap from contender to champion.

Not to be outdone, 15 year old Kate Re will make her debut in the high powered full-fendered cars in 2020. Kate is a PASS MODS graduate who tallied a pair of wins and a fourth place point finish in 2019. Taking delivery of a new Fury chassis, and plenty of test time promises that the young hot shoe will likely be a force right from the get go.

Several other drivers have yet to finalize full 2020 plans but have stated they will be racing most, if not all, of the races at the famed 3/8 mile oval in Oxford and any one of them can be a threat to win it all. Veteran Alan Wilson debuted a new Shaw chassis midway through 2019 and promptly visited the podium. Ryan Robbins as well as Scott Robbins always field ultra-fast and beautifully prepared cars. Shawn Martin is a multi-time race winner and former champion. Josh Childs made his presence known mid-way through 2019 winning a feature and qualifying for the 250 and he has purchased both an OPS and a PASS license. Ryan Deane showed a lot of speed in his Distance Racing Chassis prior to a season ending wreck with a few weeks remaining. Jeff White is a hard charging former champion and a threat to win any race he enters. Add to the mix nine time champion Jeff Taylor, race winners Scott McDaniel, Scott Moore, and young gun Austin Teras with occasional visits from Kyle Treadwell or Pass regulars like Derrick Griffith and Travis Benjamin, and it doesn't take long to realize that there are 30+ drivers that could show up and win on any given Saturday!

2020 Oxford 250 Entries Top 40
a Full Seven Months in Advance!
Oxford, ME - 1-31-20 - The 2020 edition of the Oxford 250 has reached the highest number of entries for this time of year in nearly a decade. King Racing veteran Cassius Clark officially filed the 43rd entry for the prestigious race set to be run in the last weekend in August, nearly seven months away. This puts the pace well ahead of the last few years when the historic weekend drew 55 or more of the best Super Late Model drivers in the nation.

"We are absolutely thrilled that so many top-notch drivers are already committing to be a part of one of the biggest weekends on the Eastern Seaboard," said PASS President Tom Mayberry, "The last few 250s have had some phenomenal racing, and by the looks of our entry list so far, this year will be no exception."

Two-time race winner Ben Rowe in his familiar yellow number 4 was the first of this year's entrants even before the calendar flipped into 2020. It wasn't long after that when entries began to flood the Rte. 26 office. Northeast Legend Mike Rowe was the 20th driver to officially file his intent to compete in his 38th Oxford 250 in hopes to add to his three previous wins in three different decades.

The impressive entry list reads like a Who's Who of Super Late Model racing in the Northeast, including nine-time track champion Jeff Taylor, 2019 track champion and multi-time Pro-All Star Series (PASS) winner Curtis Gerry, and back-to-back winner Eddie MacDonald who still seeks his first 250 win in a SLM.

Making the long haul all the way from Washington State will be Super Late Model standout Garret Evans whose lone appearance in 2016 resulted in a disappointing 23rd place finish after running near the front most of the day. Local young hot shoes like Austin Teras and Josh Childs, who have both been feature winners at the famed 3/8 mile oval, promise to make the veterans earn their way, while the Canadian contingent will be represented by Cole Butcher, who has shown a tremendous amount of speed in several races.

Among the most recent entries are the likes of three-time 250 Champion Travis Benjamin, four-time PASS Champion DJ Shaw, and last year's runner up Derek Griffith who will all compete to wear the wreath at the end of 250 laps. With 43 of the best drivers in America already on the entry list, the 47th annual Oxford 250 promises to be the best yet with the entry list sure to rise in coming months.

Four of Five OCS Champs to Defend,
One Moving On Up
Oxford, ME - A weather-tame month of March has slowly melted away any remnants of winter, and pending any crazy spring storms, the attention starts to turn toward the upcoming 2020 season. Checking in on our 2019 OCS Champions, we find that four of the five are set to return to their respective divisions to attempt a repeat of 2019. Only the T&M Funding Rookie Champion Brady Childs will make the jump to a higher class.

Crazy Horse Racing and High Performance Parts Super Late Model Champion Curtis Gerry #7g is geared up for his second full time season at Oxford Plains Speedway (OPS). Arguably the most successful SLM driver at OPS in the last few seasons with nearly a dozen wins declared his intent late in 2018 to run weekly at the famed 3/8 mile oval. The season couldn't have gone much better for the Waterboro driver as Gerry clinched the championship with a race left still on the schedule. "Our first full year at Oxford exceeded our expectations. There are a bunch of excellent drivers that are really great to race with. We had a lot of fun and we certainly hope that 2020 is just as successful as 2019." The Driver of the black 7G looks to become the first back to back title winner since Tim Brackett accomplished the feat in 2015-2016.

Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Champion Matt Dufault #61 has his sights set on his third championship, a feat accomplished only by Kurt Hewins and the late Larry Emerson. That will be no easy task in 2020 as the list of competitors is long and deep on any given Saturday night. "I think it is really wide open. Some guys have new cars and some of the guys built up a good notebook on their cars coming back," said Dufault. "Last year we were really aggressive trying different things, and I feel like we have it narrowed down to what works good. I can't wait to get started, it should be a barn burner! As an 18 time winner in the competitive Street Stock class, Dufault has moved to within 10 wins of Skip Tripp, the division's all-time leader.

Oxford's Chad Wills #54 was a first time champion last year in The Spencer Group Paving Bandit class. As the division starts its seventh full season, Wills believes the division is ripe for one of the best years yet. The driver of the familiar black and yellow KHM number 54 is, as of this writing, the only former bandit champion slated to compete in the division full time in 2020. While that experience is handy, it does not lock him into the head table for the banquet at years end. Wills points out, "a lot of people improved at the end of 2019. It should be a very competitive class in 2020. My goal right now is to just contend for the championship." The chore will be made a bit more difficult in 2020 as the division moves back to a 3 week rolling average to determine lineups. Known for his week to week consistency, Wills will most likely find himself starting at or near the back of the weekly lineups and forced to make his way to the front week in and week out to maintain that steadiness.

One of the most exciting divisions at OPS is the Full-Size Figure 8 divisions presented by the Vierra State Farm Agency. The 2019 title winner Larry Lizotte #00 is set to etch his name in the record books as a multi-time champion, like his hall of fame father, five- time champion Jon Lizotte. No matter what though, the younger Lizotte is mostly just looking to have a whole lot of fun this coming year. "I just want to be as competitive as last year. No matter how I finish I know I had fun. I enjoy racing with the guys in the Figure 8 division," said the 2019 champ. The Oxford Figure 8 division is known as one of the most competitive divisions in the state. The 2020 season promises to have several experienced drivers returning to the class making it both extra exciting, and more difficult for a repeat champion.

The lone driver not returning to defend their championship from 2019 is the teen aged chauffeur from Leeds, Brady Childs #1. After a very successful couple of years in the T&M Funding Rookie division, the third generation driver is making the switch to Wednesday nights and the more powerful Harnish HVAC Outlaw class. Childs, winner of seven races in the rookie class, is hoping to make his mark as he embarks on a new racing venture, but is also keeping expectations realistic. "My goal for 2020 is to just do a good job. I'm not expecting to go win," said the youngster, "It's all about the fun. I enjoy how close my family gets when we are racing and I just like to go fast." With a family pedigree as lengthy as any in New England, and enough laps in a full sized car over the past two year, Childs is almost certain to be a factor to win on any given night.

No matter the driver, the 2020 season at Oxford Plains Speedway promises to be a great one!

ANOTHER GENERATION OF THE
ROWE FAMILY SET TO TACKLE
OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY IN 2014
Hang onto your hats as another member of the legendary Rowe family will take to the 3/8 mile Oxford Plains Speedway in 2014. Soon to be fourteen years old, Gunnar Rowe of Turner, Maine will be making his OPS racing debut on Friday, May 2, 2014 in the highly competitive Pro Late Model division.

Gunnar will kick off the season in a brand new, 2014 Pro Late Model built by family members with the support of Mike Lux, and Lux Enterprises. The young Rowe will turn fourteen on April 28th, just prior to the start of the season, and will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of his father Tommy Rowe, his uncle Ben Rowe and his legendary grandfather Mike Rowe. Gunnar understands that this season will be quite a learning process, but he feels that by mid-season he will have his driving skills honed well enough to be competing for the top ten and above.

The younger Rowe practiced a Pro Late Model earlier and if his times and smoothness behind the wheel are any indication, he may become a threat much earlier than he thinks. His father, Tommy Rowe will act as crew chief for the #24, and you can count on all the family to be there to offer support weekly. The support will be endless for the young man as he can count on advice from some of the best in the business including car owner Mike Lux.

Gunnar is a very quiet young man until you strap him into a racecar, and then he just explodes with enthusiasm and lets his driving skills do the talking for him. The Turner, Maine, Tripp Middle School eighth grader, had huge success and championships in Go-Karts and also competed in the Whiz Kids at Beech Ridge, and everyone is anticipating success as he moves up the ladder. This is another great example of today’s youth exploding onto the scene in the world of motorsports.

Gunnar understands he has some big shoes to fill in the sport of auto racing, but he is not worried about that at all, as he is going to improve at his own pace, and he is just proud to be part of the greatest racing family in Maine and beyond. This way of thinking is very mature, and just may be the perfect attitude for the next great “Rowe Racer.”

OXFORD & PASS WIN BIG
AT RACIN’ PREVIEW
Another Racin’ Preview Show has come and gone, and once again Oxford Plains Speedway and the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) came away with several top awards for their display of racecars including “Best of Show”.

Once again the Steve Perry produced event brought much attention to the sport of auto racing as several tracks from Maine and New Hampshire showed off their wares for 2014. Oxford Plains Speedway and the PASS Tour had eight of their vehicles on display, and three of them took away top honors in their respective categories. The beautifully prepared PASS Tour racer of Johnny Clark took top honors as the “Best Appearing Super Late Model.” Clark completed his racer just in time for the show as he wrapped up the final touches on Friday afternoon. Ajay Cates scored the top spot as the “Best Appearing Mid-Week Racer.” Cates will be racing in the Wednesday night Oxford Acceleration Series as a rookie in the Sport Truck class. The beautifully prepared Pro Late Model of Gunnar Rowe captured “Best in Show” honors. This fourteen year old racer will be making his debut in a brand new Pro Late Model built by the Lux Enterprises family.

Other well built, and beautifully prepared equipment in the OPS booth was the #29 Pro Late Model of Trevor Sanborn, as well as a sweet looking Go-Kart driven this year by Riley Corbridge. Alex Lacognata’s PASS Sportsman was once again a real eye catcher, as was the ISMA Supermodified show car, and the NEMA Lite of Dan Cugini.

Oxford Plains Speedway and PASS would like to thank all the racers that supported the Racin’ Preview in our booth as well as all the race fans, families, and crews that supported the show.

OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY & PASS WELL REPRESENTED
AT THE NORTHEAST MOTORSPORTS EXPO IN AUGUSTA
The bad weather might have held back the crowd on Saturday at the 26th Annual Northeast Motorsports Expo in Augusta, Maine, but the fumes of new paint, and the smell of race fuel was in the air exciting the hundreds of race fans that enjoyed the event. The Augusta Civic Center was filled to capacity with racecars, dragsters, Speedway booths, and vendors galore. Numerous awards were presented on Friday night and the Helluva Good Pit Stop Challenge entertained the crowd all three days of the event.

Oxford Plains Speedway and PASS returned to the show after a few years absence, and had a fine display of beautiful race equipment on hand. Young, fourteen year old Gunnar Rowe and the beautiful LUX Enterprises #24 Pro Late Model was the first car that greeted race fans. Gunnar Rowe is the grandson of the legendary Mike Rowe and will be making his racing debut on Fridays in the Oxford Championship Series Pro Late Model class. Gunnar’s previous experience came from a very successful go-karting career. Rowe’s car won the “Best Appearing Award” for Super Late Models entered in the show. Alex Lacognata will be entering as a Rookie of the Year candidate in the PASS Sportsman division in 2014. His beautifully prepared #66x will be a contender each time out in the PASS Sportsman class.

PASS Mod driver, Scott Alexander had his super sleek #17A on display and he walked away with two awards from the show including “Best Appearing Modified” and he also won a “Mainely Award” for Touring Support Division Driver of the Year. The 2013 PASS Mod champion is looking forward to defending his title in 2014. Corey Morgan had his beautiful Ford Mustang bodied Pro Late Model on hand. The car was a real eye catcher, and certainly will be a solid contender on Friday nights as well. Also entered in the OPS booth was Jordyn Childs gorgeous Go Kart. Father Jimmy really did a great job preparing his daughters car for the show.

A pair of Mini-Cups helped fill up display. Rich Hall brought out the #13 machine, and Barry Morris had his #5 sweet ride on display as well. Both Mini-Cup cars and the Go-Kart were great hits with the kids all weekend long. Last but not least was the ISMA Super Modified Show Car that was on display. This piece had kids in and out of the cockpit all weekend long. The excitement is high for the return of the ISMA Supers on Friday night, June 20th.

Oxford Plains Speedway management would like to thank all the racers that bought the equipment and placed it in our display. The next show will be held in Portland in Mid-February.
CHARLIE & JAMIE ROCKWELL
TO HEAD PASS TOUR TECH
PASS President, Tom Mayberry has announced that Charlie Rockwell will be taking over Chief Technical Inspector job for the PASS North Series in 2014. Rockwell will be taking over the position from long time inspector, Scott Reed whom is pursuing other interests. Rockwell will be taking over the job immediately, handling all technical questions from racers throughout the off-season.

Rockwell hails from Orleans, Vermont where he is a quality control inspector for the Ethan Allen Company. He resides with his wife Jamie, and young daughter, Marina. Rockwell has been involved in racing for numerous years, first working on race cars, then stepping behind the wheel for several years driving everything from Enduro cars to Late Models. In 2011, the heavy underdog qualified for the Oxford 250, putting a check mark on one of his bucket list items.

In 2010, Charlie and his wife Jamie took over as the Tech team at Canaan Fair Speedway where the team developed into one of the most respected in the business. His vast knowledge of everything from four cylinders, to Late Models, Super Late Models, as well as Modifieds made him a leading candidate for the job. Jamie Rockwell will also be joining the team as she will work side by side with her husband in the tech area.

“I am really excited to have Charlie and Jamie on board with us, stated Tom Mayberry, they are first class all the way, and will fit in nicely in our organization. Charlie’s knowledge of numerous types of racecars is important for us, and he and his wife Jamie, both have tremendous people skills. Losing Scotty left us with a big void, as his vast knowledge and tremendous work ethic will definitely be missed, but we feel that the Rockwell’s will be good replacements as we head into the future.”

The 2014 PASS North schedule will be released in the very near future.

For for technical questions for the PASS North Series, contact Charlie & Jamie Rockwell at 802-754-2822 after 5 PM.

MINI STOCKS DROPPED FROM
OPS 2014 SCHEDULE
Oxford Plains Speedway President Tom Mayberry has announced that the Mini Stock division that has been part of the Oxford Plains Speedway Championship Series that competes weekly in the Friday night portion of the racing card will not be returning in 2014.

“This has been a very difficult decision for us, stated Mayberry. The group struggled not only in numbers last year; it also struggled in being a competitive division. There were basically three competitive cars and the rest struggled to stay on the lead lap during most events. That is one reason, but the main reason is that several of these cars have become so advanced, and so high priced that in order to reel the class in, and level the playing field, we would pretty much have to write a new rulebook for each car. This makes no sense to us as we are heading in a different direction as we move forward into the future. When we made rule changes last year, ones that we thought would be better for the division, a large number of teams parked their racecars because of no foresight and total disregard for the betterment of the class and its’ future. As my new GM, Dick Therrien stated at the recent rules meeting, All I’m hearing is “me” and “I” and nobody seems to have any interest in turning the situation into a “we.”

The decision has been made to go back to square one, and present a bone stock four and six cylinder class. This class will compete in our Motor Mayhems monthly, as well as once a month on Friday nights in our Oxford Championship Series. Our goal will be to turn this new class into a regular weekly Mini Stock division within the next couple of years. The other Oxford Championship Series events will feature PASS Mods, PASS Sportsman, Dwarf Cars, Wicked Good Racing and a host of other special events.
