Defending Street Stock
Champion Just
Having Fun, Pays It Forward |
When asked what his goals in racing were, two
time defending Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Street
Stock Champion Matt Dufault provided an unexpected
answer. "I know my car owner really likes winning
championships," said the 15 year veteran, "But for me I
just want to win races. I'd love to move up into Super
Late Models but I can't really afford to do it. I'm very
happy running Street Stocks. There's always good guys to
race. They are some of the best in the New England no
doubt about it."
From a driver who has won 10
races over the past two seasons to accompany those
championships most people would think the Turner driver
is intent on a adding a third title to his resume.
Dufault, however, seems more intent on having fun. "I
don't get out much unless it's on Saturday from April to
September (racing cars) - I don't have a lot of crew but
my car owner Rodney Williams, my girlfriend Jessie, my
Mom, Jacob Vaughn and Kameron Weir sometimes. I think a
lot of guys know I don't really have any crew so if
something goes bad a bunch of racers will come out of
the stands and help me out. That's pretty awesome, I'm
lucky to have them on our side."
While Dufault is
quick to be thankful, he can often be found chatting up
fellow racers or offering advice to a struggling
competitor. "I've basically done my own setups my whole
career. No one ever really gave me the keys to something
that's bad fast so that's really gratifying," The 38
time Oxford winner pronounced, "I like pay it forward
when I can and help people get the same enjoyment out of
it that I do."
The driver of the familiar blue 61
got the bug by just going to the races as a fan with pal
Troy Jordan as a teenager. "My dad thought we were going
out partying and just saying we were going to the races,
but we were actually just going to the races."
It didn't take long before the itch to drive led him to
the Runnin' Rebels class. Dufault was not always the
front runner he is today, that took a lot of trial and
error to figure it out. These trying times are most
likely where he got his desire to help others run fast
too. "When I first started out we struggled because we
just didn't have the knowledge," he said after giving a
young racer a brand new helmet he wasn't using, "so if I
can lend a hand, or make it easier to get going, then
maybe that racer will stay with it. Plus, I can tell
him, 'Here, take this helmet and go out there and hit
people, 'cause that's what racing is all about.'"
While obviously tongue in cheek, he acknowledges,
"Stuff breaks, you get in wrecks, and sometimes people
run you like crap, but that's all just part of it. You
find a way to get there next week."
One thing is
for certain, Matt Dufault doesn't forget to have fun
along the way to winning his share of races. And whether
he wins it all or not seems to be less important than
the time spent at the track or in the garage among
family and friends. |
