Calvin Rose, Jr. Scores First Victory
in
Super Late Models at OPS |
Oxford, Maine - Calvin Rose, Jr. of Turner raced
to a career-first Super Late Model win Saturday night,
topping the Budweiser Championship Series stock car
racing program at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Rose, a
Street Stock champion at the track two years ago, moved
up to the top class last season and won Rookie of the
Year honors. But victory eluded him and the family race
team for the first time in awhile after being successful
at every level coming up through the local racing ranks.
A change in equipment just a week ago resulted in a
fourth-place finish, their best in a Super Late Model.
Saturday they lined up on the front row and led all but
one of the fifty laps in the night's headline event.
Veteran racer Kelly Moore of Scarborough, a former
NASCAR Busch North Series champion and the 1984 track
champion at Oxford Plains Speedway, chased Rose to the
checkered flag in second position after winning the
battle for runner-up honors against rookie Gabe Brown of
Center Conway, New Hampshire.
Scott McDaniel of
Livemore, the previous week's Super Late Model winner,
made a late charge into fourth position after starting
21st. TJ Brackett rounded out the top-five, again
gaining several positions racing hard in the outside
groove after starting from 17th position. Unofficially,
Brown reclaimed a narrow lead over Brackett atop the
Budweiser Championship Series Super Late Model
standings.
Matt Dufault of Turner raced to his
second Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock
division victory of the season in impressive fashion.
Starting from 11th position, Dufault methodically worked
his way into contention before getting to the head of
the pack at about the halfway point in the 30-lap race.
The win helped Dufault retain his position atop the
Street Stock championship standings.
Zach Bowie
of Turner was the best of the rest, chasing Dufault
under the checkered flag. Rick Spaulding of Lisbon
nailed down his second straight third-place finish.
Tyler King of Gray and rookie Nick Stanley of Oxford
completed the top-five rundown. Seventh-place finisher
Andrew Breton of Greene led a good portion of the race
before meeting with some misfortune.
Mike
McKinney of Berlin, New Hampshire outran all rivals once
in front of the field in the Bandit division's main
event. McKinney swapped the lead with Kurt Hewins of
Leeds for much of the 20-lap distance before pulling
away after the final restart.
Hewins earned a
runner-up trophy, with Waterford's Jamie Heath driving
from 14th starting position to a third-place finish.
Buckfield's Chad Wills was fourth under the checkered
flag. Current Bandits championship points leader Dustin
Salley of Poland rounded out the top five.
Nate
Symonds of Casco drove his 1947 Plymouth to victory in a
15-lap showcase for the Wicked Good Vintage Racing
Association Hobby division. Mark Bowie of South Paris
was the runner-up in a six-cylinder Dodge Charger from
just slightly over 50 years ago. Jesse Miochaud hauled
all the way from Caribou to claim a third-place trophy.
Thomas Brackett of Auburn won his sixth Rookie
division race of the season, with Waterford's Brady
Heath a close second-place finisher.
The
Budweiser Championship Series at Oxford Plains Speedway
resumes this Saturday night, June 23, with the North
East Classic Lites joining all five weekly divisions,
including the Super Late Models. Kid's racecar rides
will also be available. Post time is 7:00 p.m. For more
