Kelly Moore Prevails in
Super Late Model Action on
Applebee’s Fireworks Night
Oxford, Maine - Kelly Moore of Scarborough raced to his first Super Late Model victory at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday night, topping the Applebee's Fireworks Night racing card before an impressive crowd of race fans at the historic Route 26 speedplant.

For Moore it was his first trip to victory lane at Oxford Plains Speedway since a NASCAR Busch North Series triumph in 1991. Moore was the 1984 Oxford Plains Speedway track champion. After leaving weekly action at the track he went on to be a champion of the NASCAR Busch North Series (now known as NASCAR K&N East Series), where he remains the all-time top race winner in that touring series' history.

Moore spent most of this 50-lapper fending off an aggressive challenge by Jeremy Davis of Tamworth, New Hampshire, who turned in the night's quickest lap en route to his second-place finish. Oxford's Dennis Spencer, Jr. raced most of the 50-lap headline race in third position, where he finished the event.

Dixfield's Scott Robbins raced hard to earn a fourth-place finish, just edging out Strong's Tracy Gordon, who was impressive charging into contention from the outside groove. Gordon, coincidentally, was the Oxford Plains Speedway track champion during that 1991season when Moore last won at the track.

Reigning Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stock division champion Billy Childs, Jr. of Leeds made his first appearance of the 2018 racing season a memorable one, as he made a last-lap charge past Gary Babineau to win the 30-lap race by a margin of .064-seconds - mere inches.

Babineau, of Hollis Center, led 29.95 of the 30 laps en route to a runner-up finish. Zach Bowie of Greene made a late charge into contention in the unusually wild race. New daddy Tyler King of Gray was fourth under the checkered flag, followed by David Vaughn of Naples.

Adam Sanborn of West Paris, Oxford Plains Speedway's unofficial leader in nicknames among competitors (Larry Bandito, Adam 12, etc.), scored his first win in the Bandits division, leading all 20 laps. Sanborn, the runner-up in last year's championship battle, held off current points leader Dustin Salley of Poland to claim victory. Cam Childs of Leeds was third across the finish line, followed by Kyle Hewins of Leeds and Buckfield's Chad Wills.

Dale Lawrence of Lisbon drove to victory for the third time this year in the 20-lap Figure 8 race. Kyle Glover of Oxford matched his season-best runner-up finish. Larry Lizotte of Poland was third, followed by championship points leader Kyle Kilgore of South Paris and Greg Durgin, also from South Paris.

Calab Emerson-Mains of New Gloucester earned his first trip to victory lane this season with an impressive performance in the 25-lap main event for the Oxford Acceleration Series Outlaw class. Emerson-Mains held off several challengers throughout the race, with Lyman's Ajay Cates closest under the checkered flag. Auburn's Cody Childs was the third-place finisher after racing hard in the outside groove through most of the race. Rick Thompson of Naples bounced back from a pit stop to finish fourth, ahead of Limington's Wade Gelinas.

Brandon Varney of Mechanic Falls nailed down his second straight victory in the highly-competitive Runnin' Rebels division, outrunning veteran Waterford frontrunner Jamie Heath to the checkered flag. Doug DeGroat of Oxford was third, just in front of a very-competitive AJ Smith III of South Paris. Auburn's Ralph Green rounded out the top five in the 20-lap test.

Claiming his second victory of the Applebee's Fireworks Night racing card, Brandon Varney of Mechanic Falls prevailed for the third time this season in the 20-lap finale for the Cruiser division. Phil Knowlton of Oxford, the reigning champion in the class, earned runner-up honors. Kevin Varney of Mechanic Falls, winner of the one race his son didn't prevail in, picked up the third-place trophy. William Barker of Oxford and New Gloucester's Will Dunphy, Jr. rounded out the top five.

Defending Sport Truck track champion Ryan Farrar of Oxford romped to his fourth victory in four starts this year, dominating his 20-lap feature race. Randy Green of Norway was the best of the rest. Mike Mayberry of Greene was third-place finisher. Hartford's Jake Dobson ended up on his roof, and was credited with a fourth-place run ahead of Kolby Morrell, from Sebago.

Breeanna Spaulding of Lisbon raced to her third win of the season in a 15-lap main event for the Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Ladies division. Kathryn Childs of Auburn led the opening laps of the race before settling for runner-up honors. Addie McDaniel of Bridgton earned third-place hardware, ahead of Green's Susan Veinott and Annie Chartier of Mexico.

Racing action continues with a special Pro All Stars Series Super Late Model Open on Sunday, July 1. PASS Mods and an Enduro race will also be presented. Post time is 6:00 p.m. The Budweiser Championship Series resumes with a special Friday night show on July 6 at 7:00 p.m. The Oxford Acceleration Series is in action every Wednesday night through the end of August, with racing action beginning at 7:00 p.m. Oxford Plains Speedway is located at 877 Main Street, on State Route 26 in Oxford, Maine.
