Former
Track Champion Dennis Spencer Back in Victory Lane
on Applebee's Night 10
different winners in 10 weeks for headline Super
Late Model class this year. |
Oxford, Maine - Dennis Spencer, Jr. of Oxford
returned to victory lane at Oxford Plains Speedway,
claiming his first Super Late Model victory since
returning to action last year before a healthy
Applebee's Night crowd.
Spencer led the early
stages of the race before yielding the top spot to
Scarborough's Mike Fowler, then stalked the new
frontrunner for several laps before powering around him
in the outside groove in the closing laps.
Fowler
and Derek Griffith of Hudson, New Hampshire were second
and third-place finishers, respectively. Trevor Sanborn
borrowed the Benjamin 17 and raced to a fourth-place
finish, in front of Hebron's Alan Wilson.
None
of the previous nine winners from earlier in this season
were able to finish among the top five in the
unusually-competitive top class. Spencer and Fowler won
the 12-lap Super Late Model heat races.
Matt
Dufault of Turner dominated the 30-lap feature race for
Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Street Stocks, a week
after winning a thriller where he passed most of the
field twice aboard the Rodney Williams 61. Oxford's Kim
'Dog' Tripp led the race before Dufault went by, and
then raced to runner-up honors to the delight of the
healthy Holiday crowd.
Turner's Calvin Rose, Jr.,
last year's Street Stock Rookie of the Year and the
current points leader, claimed the third-place trophy.
Sabattus racers Zach Emerson and Andrew Breton rounded
out the top five. The two heat race wins were earned by
to Dufault and Bryce Mains of Naples.
Michael
McKinney of Berlin, New Hampshire capped off the best
night of his racing career with a win in the 20-lap
finale for MacDonald Motors of Bridgton Bandits division
competitors. McKinney was also triumphant in the NAPA
OAS Cruiser class.
Runner-up Tyler Green of
Turner battled McKinney throughout the Bandits'
20-lapper, with Charlie Hall of Oxford third under the
checkered flag. Oxford's Jacob Hall and Cam Child of
Leeds rounded out the top five. Brian Hiscock of Turner
and McKinney were heat race winners.
Reigning
Figure 8 Champion Jon Lizotte of Lewiston returned to
victory lane in a 15-lap race for the Dave's Small
Engine / Ariens / Gravely-sponsored class. Lizotte took
charge when the previous week's winner, David Smith of
South Paris, opened the door for the Maine Hall of
Famer. Smith salvaged runner-up honors in front of South
Paris driver Kyle Kilgore. Minot's Eric Hodgkins and
Greg Durgin of South Paris rounded out the top five.
Austin Teras of Windham extended his track
championship point lead with a win in the 25-lap feature
race for INEX Legends Cars. Buckfield's Chris Burgess
led all but the final lap after being forced from the
lead, while Kyle Hewins of Leeds earned a second trophy
in his second Legends Cars start. Ben Tinker of New
Gloucester and Hiram's Roger Edgecomb rounded out the
top five. Thomas Everson of Gilmanton Iron Works, New
Hampshire, and Burgess were heat race winners.
Gary Babineau of Hollis Center won his second straight
25-lap Outlaw feature race, outrunning proven champion
Steve Moon of Gray to the checkered flag. Caleb
Emerson-Mains of New Gloucester, Billy Childs of Leeds
and Portland's Andy King rounded out the top five. Mark
Turner of Norway and Buckfield's Gerry Freve won heat
races.
Auburn's Rick Montminy scored a popular,
first-ever win in the 20-lap feature race for Runnin'
Rebel division competitors. Montminy turned back a late
challenge by Cam Childs of Leeds to post the victory,
after surviving earlier tests by proven winners Dustin
Salley of Poland and Shaun Hinkley of Oxford. Childs,
Salley and Hinkley chased Montminy under the checkered
flag in that order, with the top five filled out by
Auburn's Brandon Varney. Hinkley and Salley won heat
races.
McKinney's Cruiser division win was his
first of two on the night. He also won the heat race.
John Childs of Leeds mounted a stiff challenge, but
ended up in second position. Auburn's Mikel Martin
claimed the third-place trophy. Paul Rowe of South Paris
was fourth across the finish line, followed by Auburn's
John Poulin.
Casco's Mark Grantham led
wire-to-wire to win the Sport Truck 20-lapper. Corey
Williams of Sumner prevailed in a spirited battle for
second with Ajay Cates of Biddeford. Kyle Hewins of
Leeds and Ryan Farrar of Livermore Falls rounded out the
top five. Grantham also won the heat race.
Shelby
Shurtleff of Dixfield muscled by Maggie Ferland of
Poland on the final lap to win the Ladies division
20-lap main event. Carleigh Vaughn of Naples was third,
followed by Sue Veinott of Greene and Mexico's Anne
Chartier. Ferland won the heat race.
