Rain reigns over all except five
heats;
TD Banknorth 250 to resume Monday at 2
OXFORD, Maine - For only the third time in its proud history and
the first time in 22 years, the TD Banknorth 250 Presented By New
England Dodge Dealers could not be completed on its scheduled day.
Rain arrived shortly after 10 a.m.
Sunday, delayed the start of qualifying by 3 1/2 hours and stopped
the first-round heats on three occasions before Oxford Plains
Speedway owner Bill Ryan was forced to concede the 35th annual event
to Mother Nature.
Eighty-seven Late Model drivers from six states and two Canadian
provinces will try again at 2 p.m. Monday.
The rescheduled program will include the sixth and final 20-lap
opening round heat race, three consolation events, three last
chances race, the main event and a pair of 30-lap features for the
Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Strictly Stock and Mini Stock
divisions.
Many of the pre-race favorites and top drivers in the region already
are in the main event, but plenty of their peers face a fitful
night's sleep as they will eed to take the scenic route into the
summer classic.
Scott Robbins christened his quest
for his first TD Banknorth 250 title since 2002 with a victory in
the first qualifier, earning the Oxford Networks Pole Award.
Robbins started his day in promising
fashion when his wife, Jessica, pulled the coveted chip reading
"POLE" in the pre-race draw.
Tommy Ricker, Eddie MacDonald, Brad Leighton and Carey Martin won
the next four preliminaries.
Ricker prevailed by little more than
a fender over Cris Michaud in the closest race of the day.
Other notables securing a spot in the finale were NASCAR's Kevin
Harvick, Patrick Laperle, Ben Rowe, Travis Adams, Joey Polewarczyk
Jr., defending champion Roger Brown, American-Canadian Tour point
leader Scott Payea, Dennis Spencer Jr. and 16-year-old Derek
Ramstrom in his first 250 try.
Harvick will extend his Maine vacation by an extra day and return
for the feature.
Last year's runner-up Dale Verrill
and 2006 bridesmaid Bill Whorff Jr. also transferred to the main
event along with T.J. Watson, Nick Sweet and Rick Thompson Jr.
Robbie Crouch and Yvon Bedard share
the front row for today's sixth first-round primer.
Leading the list of pre-race headliners still on the outside looking
in: Oxford Networks Late Model point leader Ricky Rolfe; seven-time
ACT champ Jean-Paul Cyr, Shawn Martin, Tim Brackett, Bobby Dragon,
Glen Luce and John Donahue.
